For roughly two centuries, modern economies have equated human worth with economically scarce mental work – analysis, pattern recognition, technical fluency. These sat at the top of the talent hierarchy because markets paid the most for them. AI is eroding that scarcity, and the uncomfortable thing it reveals is that much of what got labeled “talent” was really just “thing machines couldn’t do yet.”
The system that tells people their value comes from productivity doesn’t just affect knowledge workers anxious about automation. It’s the same system grinding down the person working nights to keep the lights on. Neither has a workable framework for meaning outside of economic output. One group has the breathing room to notice the problem; the other is too busy surviving to care about existential questions – which doesn’t mean those questions don’t apply to them.
The “which career is safe from automation” conversation is already stale. What does it collapse every decision into? Salary survivability curves and displacement timelines – neither of which tells you anything useful about where to put your energy. The more interesting question is what work actually depends on having lived a life: judgment shaped by accumulated experience, the ability to read a room, building trust through presence, knowing when someone needs to be challenged rather than comforted. These get dismissed as soft skills, but they’re the durable ones precisely because they can’t be reduced to pattern matching on training data.
Previous automation waves – looms, assembly lines, spreadsheets – generated identical anxieties and then produced entirely new categories of work nobody predicted. AI may do the same. Anyone claiming certainty about the trajectory is selling something (and probably something adjacent to AI consulting). What does seem clear is that the psychological contract between work and identity is already shifting. You can hear it in how people talk about career choices now – less confidence, more dread.
The transition will be uneven in ways that don’t track neatly onto skill or effort. Some people will find new freedom. Others will get crushed in the gap between old structures collapsing and new ones not yet built. Both outcomes will happen simultaneously, to different people, for reasons that have more to do with luck and timing than merit.
Start paying attention to the parts of your work that are fundamentally connected to being a person in the world. Not because that guarantees anything, but because the window where pure cognitive throughput commands a premium is narrowing – and what remains on the other side rewards a different set of capacities entirely.
